REGISTRATION & INSURANCE

One WaterCar.
Road and water.

WaterCar EV combines a recreational boat with electric low-speed road capability. It is designed for local trips between a storage location and a suitable launch using permitted routes, with outboard propulsion for boating.

Street-legal registration and operating rules for low-speed vehicles vary by state and local jurisdiction and may change. This information is general guidance only. Confirm current requirements with your state DMV and local authorities before registering or operating your WaterCar on public roads.

01 / OWNERSHIP, CLEARLY EXPLAINED

Two identifiers. One vehicle.

VIN

17-character vehicle identifier

WaterCar assigns a Vehicle Identification Number for the road vehicle. The vehicle identification, manufacturer certification label and vehicle Certificate of Origin support review by the motor vehicle agency.

HIN

12-character hull identifier

WaterCar assigns a separate Hull Identification Number for the vessel. The hull identification and vessel Certificate of Origin support review by the boating registration authority.

A VIN and HIN identify the vehicle and vessel. They do not, by themselves, grant registration, permission to use a particular road or waterway, or insurance coverage.

02 / OWNERSHIP, CLEARLY EXPLAINED

Registration follows the jurisdiction.

Federal vehicle and vessel requirements are distinct from state registration and local operating rules. The road and vessel records are handled through the applicable registration authorities.

The recreational EV’s road drive is limited to 25 mph. Its intended road use is local, low-speed travel. Permitted routes depend on state and local requirements; proximity to water alone does not establish an available road route or launch.

Use the vessel capacity plate and the records for the specific model and configuration when reviewing passenger and loading limits. Road seating and weight ratings are separate from vessel capacity. The number of people permitted aboard on the water does not establish the number permitted during road travel.

03 / OWNERSHIP, CLEARLY EXPLAINED

Insurance review spans the whole use.

A WaterCar coverage review involves road travel, operation on the water, launching and retrieval, storage, and transport. These uses concern the same vehicle.

For an insurance review, request the available identification and technical information for the specific WaterCar. Include the model year, configuration and intended use so the relevant records can be identified.

The documentation request can describe road travel, boating, launch and retrieval, storage, and transport. These details help WaterCar organize the requested vehicle information.

Road and water

Vehicle and vessel identity, intended territory and use.

Launch and retrieval

The transition between land operation and boating.

Storage and transport

Where it is kept and how it is moved between destinations.

04 / OWNERSHIP, CLEARLY EXPLAINED

Documentation for a specific vehicle.

Owners, agents, brokers, carriers and registration authorities can request available public WaterCar product information. Model year, configuration and jurisdiction help our team identify the information relevant to the request.

The Safety & Standards page explains the construction, intended use and scope of the certification records.

05 / OWNERSHIP, CLEARLY EXPLAINED

Outside the United States.

Importation, registration and operating requirements are jurisdiction-specific. U.S. identification and certification records do not establish eligibility in another country. Documentation requests can identify the destination and proposed use.
