Road and vessel registration, organized in one place. Start with the California DMV’s vehicle/vessel procedure, then explore the records and official resources below.
Street-legal registration and operating rules for low-speed vehicles vary by state and local jurisdiction and may change. This information is general guidance only. Confirm current requirements with your state DMV and local authorities before registering or operating your WaterCar on public roads.
California DMV publishes a specific process for amphibious vehicle/vessel combinations: two original applications, with the vehicle application processed first and the vessel application second. The resulting vehicle and vessel registrations have separate expiration dates.
The road side is reviewed through DMV’s vehicle registration process. WaterCar supplies manufacturer identification and build records for the specific vehicle.
California Highway Patrol’s LSV guidance identifies a valid driver license, current vehicle registration, and proof of financial responsibility among the road-use requirements.
DMV’s vessel registration page lists the BOAT 101 application, ownership evidence, and applicable fees. It also links to boating education and mussel-fee information. For an amphibious combination, use this alongside DMV’s dual-registration procedure.
WaterCar can provide vehicle and hull identification, model-year and configuration information, vehicle and vessel Certificates of Origin, and relevant manufacturer records.
Send the model year, VIN or HIN if available, and the information requested by your reviewing organization.
Registration does not identify every road or launch available for a trip. Check the streets, crossings, local restrictions, and launch access with the responsible agencies. CHP’s guidance explains California’s LSV operating rules.
Road classification and marine registration are separate subjects. Our existing explainers organize the background:
