The Gator Kit is designed to be an economical and easy to assemble amphibious vehicle.  The key components that make this possible are a unique body/hull design from WaterCar --- developed, tried, true, and tested.  It is foam filled and virtually unsinkable.

All you need from WaterCar is a Gator Body and the Patented WaterCar Transmission, all other parts can be gathered from a Volkswagen donor car or bought right off the shelf from an aftermarket parts manufacturer.

The design of the Gator allows for many exterior components of a Jeep CJ8 to interchange with it.  For example, roof, doors, windshield, headlights, seats, mirrors, and so on.

In addition, the very successful, Volkswagen rear engine assembly (the most used assembly for the past 40 years) bolts seamlessly to the patented WaterCar transmission gearbox.  This allows for on-road drivability, on-water cruise-ability, and vice versa.

The fundamental concept for the Gator Kit is that it allows various factory components to be easily interchanged, depending on the look you want and bolted directly in place.  The Gator is available in 12 standard gel coat colors and can be ordered with either left or right hand steering.

Although, the Gator is not designed as a high-speed planing vehicle (top water speed 8 mph), it is a very capable boat on the water and a quite capable on-and-off road vehicle.   Over 10 inches of ground clearance and top speeds of 85 mph on the highway

DEVELOPMENT OF THE GATOR KIT

The Gator Kit concept parallels the idea held by Bruce Myers when he designed the first Myers Manx dune buggy in 1964.  Simply, remove the body of a Volkswagen Bug and replace it with a fiberglass body.  Over the past 40+ years this basic idea has been duplicated 1,000’s of times, as high- quality yet easy to assemble kits which people could work on at home in their garages.  Bruce’s idea pioneered the ground-work for what the off-road industry has evolved into today. These cars are a blast to drive off road, in the desert, dunning in the sand or even cruising down the freeway.  They are arguably the most fun vehicle ever built.  Take a look at Bruce’s history, http://www.meyersmanx.com/history.shtml, to further understand.

WaterCar has taken this same concept a step further.  Imagine a vehicle that can do everything a Myers Manx can do, but taking it to the next level and onto the water!  Yes, that’s right, a fiberglass buggy that can be driven straight into the water. The water barrier has finally been removed.  The world is 75% water, and owning a Gator means you are no longer tethered to the land, imagine the potential.  The Gator has opened up a whole new dimension to people around the globe!  The list of possibilities is endless and the uses have only just begun to surface.  You can finally drive directly into the water and just keep on going.

It is still a lightweight easy to build fiberglass body, with a Volkswagen chassis.  The only difference is that the chassis is placed inside the fiberglass body, where as the Myers Manx is bolted on top of the chassis.  The idea behind the Gator Kit is that if you can build a Myers Manx then you can build a Gator.

In 2006, WaterCar Inc. conducted a worldwide survey to determine what kind of amphibious vehicle people wanted.  We are very grateful to the nearly 10,000 individuals that replied and took the time to answer the survey. We discovered that having a high speed/high cost amphibious vehicle was only desirable to a smaller percentage of people.  The majority of people wanted an economical, easy to maintain, four-seater amphibious  vehicle.

The Gator is the culmination of worldwide participation and input.  In the survey we asked specifically how people would use it.  Respondents had some really interesting ideas of what could be done with a non-planeing vehicle, like the Gator.  We had people that wanted a car for: Hunting, fishing, boating, cruising rivers, boat/car combination for towing, elimination of storage fee for boat, search and rescue, just for fun, saving money on slip fees, second car, tender for yacht, tow vehicle for motor home, island hopper, cruising, traveling, accessing normally inaccessible areas, and the list keeps going…

Testimonials:

Dan B. - “If I had an amphibious vehicle I would hunt and fish all in one vehicle, it would be such a time saver.”

Dave S. -  “If I had a car to cruise down the river, I could take the whole family for an afternoon cruise without having to deal with launching the boat.  And still be able to make dinner reservations! It’s the best idea yet!”

Harvey J.-  “ I would no longer have to chose to tow (either) a car or a boat behind my motor home.  If I had an amphibious vehicle I would have both in one, and would not have to pay for storage.”

Natalie K. (from the Philippines)-  “It would save me so much time and money, instead of having to wait in traffic and pay the toll for the bridge, I could jump in the water and drive across.  Haha  I really like the idea of a car going in the water.”

Ahmed (Kuwait) -  “I could have use for an amphibious car, for a tender on my yacht.  And I would not have to waste time and money on shore for a taxi and it could be so easy to get to shore and back and to pick up my friends at the airport,”

Abdul Rauf Jagda (Dubia) – “If I had a car that could go on land and on water, it would be so easy for me to travel to friends and to business partners houses on some of the other palm and world islands. I wouldn’t have to drive two hours out of my way to get to their houses or businesses.

Mace P. (Australia) – “If I had an off road and water capable car I would be able to battle the floods and travel up stream in order to save people’s lives.“
